Lynton & Lynmouth, the jewel in North Devon’s crown.

Their beautiful location means they are uniquely placed as a holiday resort; on the doorstep there are quite literally breath-taking sea views, the world famous Valley of the Rocks walk, an incredible Victorian funicular railway, woodland and riverside trails to explore, and enough cafés, pubs and restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets.

The shopping areas are blissfully free from the ubiquitous chains and fast-food outlets that are seen in most towns, instead the high street offers a selection of art galleries, gift shops and independent clothing boutiques.

Within half and hour’s drive however, a wealth of the county’s most popular attractions can be found.

The stunning golden sands and crashing waves of destination beaches at Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton Sands are easily reached.

The charming Edwardian resort of Ilfracombe, with its picturesque harbour and famous tunnel beaches, offers a traditional slice of seaside holiday life; while the ancient fishing village of Clovelly, still uses donkeys to transport goods up its steep, cobbled slopes.

Head towards Somerset, and you’ll come across Doone Valley where RD Blackmore’s romantic Lorna Doone was set, the steep hills of Porlock and on the other side, historic Dunster Castle, with its fully furnished rooms and stunning grounds, nestle against the seaside town of Minehead.

In another direction, the beauty and majesty of Exmoor awaits. A walker’s paradise of open moorland, spectacular coastal views, deeply wooded valleys, rivers and streams, and of course the ever-present and much-loved wildlife, make Exmoor a wonderfully unique area in which to enjoy the countryside; either on foot, or with an organised 4x4 safari.

But perhaps one of the most popular reasons for choosing Lynton & Lynmouth as a base, is their proximity to the South West Coast Path; the UK’s longest National Trail. The 630 mile route starts in Minehead in Somerset, runs along the stunning coastline of North Devon, into (and indeed right round), Cornwall, before running along Devon’s pretty south coast and finishing at Poole Harbour.

A very fit, accomplished walker, moving at pace, could complete the walk in about a month! But most people prefer a more leisurely approach and choose to make day trips to one of the many 5 and 10-15 mile routes available around North Devon, bolstered by a hearty pub lunch and rewarded by a Devon clotted-cream tea at the end!

Many of these begin or end near (or in some cases actually in) Lynton & Lynmouth, making these two lovely villages an ideal place to stay.
